Petros or Petra?
This is an excerpt from the book I am writing:……As we begin week one with a study on the foundation, I want to bring your attention to an important story. Since the foundation is made from and adorned with stones, I want to talk for a moment about Peter.
What does Peter’s name mean? ______ It means ‘rock-man” -literally meaning a small wobbly and easily movable stone.
Jesus Christ is recorded in the book of Matthew as saying,
“And I tell you that you are Peter (Petros -masculine- a small wobbly and easily movable stone), and on this rock (Petra -feminine- mountain of a rock) I will build my church and the gates of Hades. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be (will have been bound in heaven), and whatever you loose on earth will be (will have been loosed in heaven).” Then he [Jesus] ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. –Matthew 16:17-18
Did you notice the two different words for used for rock? One is strong and unmovable, unshakeable – Petra. The other is easily broken, small wobbly -Petros.
The Lord is making a point that Peter (petros) is small and volatile compared to the massive unshakeable wholeness of the Mountain of a rock (petra), yet as frail of a small rock as Peter may be The Lord declares Peters blessed in that Peter somehow was able to identify supernaturally that Jesus of Nazareth is THE Christ, THE son of the living God.
What is this ‘rock’, this Petra, the Lord refers to? The one on which the church would be built? The Rock that will prevail and win against the gates of hell itself. Could it be the revelation and insight that Jesus of Nazareth is THE Christ, THE son of the living God?
Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven
Jesus the Christ blessed Peter with a gift. Do you know what it was?
Keys! These were not just any keys. These were keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Wow. double wow. Can we just let that sink in for a moment? Really, can you imagine having keys to THE Kingdom of Heaven?
- What would you do with them?
- Where would you keep them?
- What if you lost or misplaced them?
- Would you lend them out to someone so they could do what you are supposed to do?
Jesus Called Peter. Has he called you? Have you heard the voice of God calling you? Peter answered the call by following Christ. Have you? Peter spent time with Jesus. Peter observed Jesus and did what he could to serve Jesus. Could that be said about your life now? Peter received supernatural insight from heaven. With his own mouth, Peter declared his insight out loud to Jesus…Peter says, ‘You are…’. This insight and confession brought Peter into a blessing.
