Growing as a Prophetic Singer -by Anna Blanc: Book Review

At the time of this post, I am 44 years old. Ever since I was about 21, I have been fascinated by the idea of the prophetic. I have wondered so many times about ‘this thing’ called prophetic music.

I have even questioned myself… am I a prophetic person? Am I a prophetic artist? Am I a prophetic singer? How does this idea of prophetic music fit into the local church? If I am prophetic, what are the boundaries for this gift and calling of being prophetic musically?

The book by Anna Blanc provides a true and practical piece of the ‘prophetic-singer’ puzzle that is sitting on the coffee table of my purpose.

Let’s get into our Worship Leader Review of Anna Blanc’s book called  Growing as a Prophetic Singer

Quotes about Prophetic Singing

Here are a few quotes from this book:

  • You are not the first to taste the thrill of standing in worship as a vessel of the Lord
  • Comparison is the poisonous weed that takes out brand new singers
  • It is a delusion to think that, if you are called by God to minister as a singer, your ministry will be very public and valued by many
  • Talents does not ‘wow’ God, and crowds do not move Him
  • The Lord is not looking to increase our comfort, but our righteousness
  • As the Lord increases your gifting or gives you a greater ministry platform, it is for the profit of His body
  • The one opinion that matters and the only correct evaluation of you is what the Lord thinks
  • Justice is making wrong things right
  • If we do not know the word we have nothing to sing
  • If you do not practice, you will not move forward

Singing the Word

My favorite chapter in this book is titled Singing the Word. This chapter does a great job at outlining the practice of opening the bible and singing the scriptures.

“The Bible is the most valued resource to the prophetic singer.”

Anna clearly gives the job description of the prophetic singer, which simply sing the word.

“Our job as prophetic singers is to gain an understanding of the Word, know it in our hearts, live it in our lives, open our mouths to sing it.”

I like the idea that Anna Blanc shares about us being little libraries of His Word with its many books hidden in our hearts.

I really enjoyed the practicality of this chapter. (1) put reading and meditation upon the word into your schedule (2) map out how you will spend the time studying Gods word

some helpful suggestions:

  • try reading large portions of scripture in one sitting (10 Chapters)
  • try bringing your focus and meditation slowly on the Holy Spirit who lives inside you as he leads you to one  or two verses
  • choose a passage, book or topic and study with resources such as commentaries

Envy -The Enemy Within by Bob Sorge

Envy Insults God. Songwriter and Worship leader David Baroni.

Envy almost influenced me to walk away from what I do best. Envy is a subtle and powerful weapon of darkness. If I am not careful, I will casually let envy erode the confidence and clear conscience needed to bring fulfillment in the plans and will of God for my life.

The book by Bob Sorge is a great exploration of the destructive poison of the spirit of envy.

Let’s get into our Worship Leader Review of Bob Sorge’s book called  Envy -The Enemy Within

Quotes about Praise

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from Bob Sorge’s book Envy; The Enemy Within:

  • Envy is the internal pain we feel over someone else’s success
  • Envy is the Natural by-product of being favored by God – Michael Cavanaugh
  • It’s the tallest tree that gets hit by lightning
  • Envy is always an issue with the brothers
  • No amount of practice can give you a gift you haven’t received from God
  • There is always somebody more talented than you
  • When revival hits two things typically begin to gather in abundance; people and money
  • God protects power with problems
  • My goal is to be known in Heaven
  • The best antidote for envy is the pursuit of the knowledge of the love of Christ

The Great Talent Showdown

My favorite chapter in this book is titled The Great Talent Showdown. This chapter contributes to a deeper understanding of the parable Jesus Christ shared regarding the talents found in the book of  Matthew 25:14-30

…each according to his own ability. Matthew 25: 15

Bob concludes that when it comes to the ministry of music, one’s level of giftedness becomes so measurable, you can almost put a numerical value on it.

I also like this idea that Bob brings to light; It might be tempting to look at someone else with more gifts than you and envy what they have; but the truth is that if you had their level of gifting, you could potentially suffer quick burnout and utter frustration. Your ‘ability’ may not be meant to handle it.

Having said that, I like that Bob points out that you can only work with what giftings and talents god gives you, but you can also multiply them!

Bob Sorge has also included Mike Bickle’s perspective on talents. The more talent and giftedness a person is,  more publicly and visually expressed towards a more prominent public platform.

And finally, when it comes to leadership, I like this thoughtful illustration Bob makes explain the various talents given by The Lord:

“If the level of excellence in the worship ministry (and other ministries) doesn’t grow with the church, the growth of the churchwill level off and will plateau according to the level of giftedness among its leaders.”  -Bob Sorge

Prophetic Worship Dreams

Praise Him by Susanna Katherine. Prophetic Worship Dreams. Jay Bryan Sandifer
Praise Him by Susanna Katherine. Prophetic Worship Dreams. Jay Bryan Sandifer

Again. Another dream about worship. These worship dreams are becoming a regular part of my deep quest for that longing to be enjoyed by God.

The feelings of uncertainty prohibited my confidence to lead. I was there to lead. It took several uncomfortable moments for me to focus as I searched for my purpose to connect and lead those around me. It was as If I was air dropped into the middle of an urgent rescue mission.

The people needed me to lead them, but I was not sure where they were in their relationship worship journey, I was not sure what they were used to.

The dark and cloudy atmosphere I could see with my natural eye was shrouding the direct light and worship energy which was expectant of my contribution, but because I felt new to this particular circumstance, I could not lock in immediately.

My confidence was being hindered by an apprehension that they may not follow me quick enough. I had to quickly [on demand] push through my emotional feeling of inadequacy. and find my strength to lead. I had to lead the way I knew I could only lead. I had to connect with them in a way they trust and respect the gift in me. The gift used by God to bring glory to his Name and expand his Kingdom. His deposit in me was the light for others to follow. The light connected with the light. My spirit connected with their spirit. We became unified in our song.

I woke up singing a melody to these words:

Let’ s shout it out.
Let’s shout it out.
Let’s shout the High Praises of God.

I can’t tell how many times I have woken out of sleep by the sounds of my own song leading. I just can’t help it.

Each dream is different in detail but always includes all the same components:

  • A platform.
  • A new original song.
  • An instrument.
  • A light in the darkness.
  • A large sea of faceless people. People I know are there, but I can’t see them.
  • And most importantly; an awakeningly intense feeling of Gods power and presence.

Have you ever had one of these types of worship dreams?

After having a dream like this…and becoming conscious and awake, I will make a quick voice recording of the song as sung in the dream. I know I have hundreds of song ideas, both lyrically and melodically, most of which have found their way into a recording of sorts….even as far back as ….THE cassette tape.

I would really enjoy hearing your prophetic worship dream.

Please share your prophetic worship dream in the comments below.

Wait! I’m feeling all alone.

*What do you do when it feels like no one is supporting you? simple. Go find someone to support.  You will reap what you sow…

“To be able to lead others, a man must be willing to go forward alone.” – Harry Truman

BONUS: It is really a great encouragement when we know we have the support of our peers and elders. Isn’t it? Have you found that to be true?

BUMMER: It is much more difficult when our elders and peers are distant and…or, even more so crushing, …they are disapproving and vocally unsupportive. Have you ever experienced this? ouch. tough place.

If it’s gonna be, It’s up to me

When you know you are supposed to do something DO IT. Please do not expect someone to do it for you. It is your responsibility to make sure it happens …otherwise, it won’t ….at least not thru you. Someone else will do it and you’ll be left in the dust of remorse and regret. You will see with your own eyes someone else taking your dream and vision and running with it…..that is because the vision really belongs to God. He is looking and searching for leaders!

The opinions of others should never keep you from being who you are. The opinions of others should never keep you from doing what you know you are supposed to do.

I like what motivational speaker and author Les Brown says about you, “Don’t let someone’s opinion of you become your reality.”

What an empowering and liberating thought!

You are NEVER alone!

If you feel alone you are not. You are never really alone. NEVER. You may think no one will follow you, but if you live out your passions people will follow you. This is because people are so attracted to passion. Passion attracts. Passion attracts the right people. Your passion attracts those who will follow….and btw, that is NOT supposed to be everyone. Joshua only led the nation of Israel. Joshua only leads his people…and You will only lead yours. Make your voice heard so people will hear you and follow.

Joshua had a passion for the Lord. Joshua loved the Lord. Joshua looked first for God. He pursued God’s Kingdom first.

How do I know?  simple. …so glad you asked. Joshua was successful. Joshua’s success is proof that he obeyed the commands of the LORD I have been sharing with you….the commands found in the very first verses of The Book of Joshua!

Joshua would not have been successful had he not been strong and very courageous. It took repetition to infuse this all-important message of confidence and achievement into Joshua…from more than one source…But Joshua did the deal. He didn’t just sit around and think about! He had action. He could have sat around and made a bunch of excuses about how his leader was now gone….now what? what can I do? but no! Joshua was smart enough to be able to receive the word of the Lord…to take the word in. ..to meditate on it day and night. Are you?

If you want to experience victory, success, and fulfillment you too must have the passion for the Lord. I recently explained the importance of confirmation and endorsement from man.

BUT, what if there is no man to endorse you? Are you going to sit and wait for someone to come around and make you happy, make you feel loved, make you feel inspired? As business philosopher Jim Rohn says, “What if they don’t show up?!”

“What a lovely surprise to finally discover how unlonely being alone can be.” – Ellen Burstyn

You must be like the man David and powerful and gifted leaders found the life-giving pages of the scriptures. You must speak out to yourself.

  • SELF,
  • Wake up!
  • Get up!
  • Now!
  • Find rest in God!
  • God will never leave you or abandon you! Yoo are NOT alone!
  • Remember all the benefits of God!
  • Remember God’s mercies!
  • Remember God’s Goodness!
  • SING of his Power, Might, and Greatness!
  • Do not remain silent!
  • Do not hide. no.no. no.
  • What’s with the sadness? Do you not the plans and future The LORD has for you?
  • Put all your hope in God.
  • God is the one.
  • It is not by might, not by power, but the Spirit of GOOOOODDDDDDD!!”

You must make God’s words your words….like Jesus did.

When all HELL seems to break out against you, you must find that place in God where you know you are not alone. You must use the faith God has given to you. You must trust God. You cannot base your joy, happiness, and fulfillment on what you see in the circumstances around you. You’ve got to walk your journey by the empowering and life-giving faith God has so graciously given to you Do not journey by what you natural eyes see. You are of a different world. A different kingdom. There is a deeper level at work. There is an unseen realm where the angels of the Lord are warring for your goodwill.

There is a deeper level at work. There is an unseen realm where the angels of the Lord are warring for your goodwill. Do not be afraid. Be strong and very courageous.

Quotes About Feeling Alone

“The sequence is suffering, insight, will, action, change.”  -Allen Wheelis

“We’re born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we’re not alone.” – Orson Welles

“If you want to be happy, learn to be alone without being lonely. Learn that being alone does not mean being unhappy. The world is full of plenty of interesting and enjoyable things to do and people who can enrich your life.” – Michael Josephson

Confirmation! How important is Endorsement?

“Sometimes it takes a while to recognize that someone has a special ability to get us to believe in ourselves, to tie that belief to our highest ideals, and to imagine that together we can do great things. In those rare moments, when such a person comes along, we need to put aside our plans and reach for what we know is possible.”  -Caroline Kennedy

Confirmation by definition:

  • to establish the truth, accuracy, validity, or genuineness off; verify
  • to acknowledge with definite assurance
  • to make valid or binding by some formal or legal act; sanction; ratify
  • to make firm or more firm; add strength to; settle or establish firmly
  • to strengthen (a person) in habit, resolution, opinion, etc.

Isn’t that good? Confirmation is simply establishing the truth, making the move *valid* and adding strength to the task at hand.

Are you able to explain the importance of Confirmation? Jay Bryan Sandifer
Are you able to explain the importance of Confirmation? Jay Bryan Sandifer

Confirmation: It is completely essential. It is outright necessary. It is absolutely needed…IF you are to move forward with confidence into your new dream and project.

We’ve seen in Joshua’s example that The Lord commanded Joshua to be Strong! Three times.

But here is the thing…. I think this is amazing! …..Moses told the very same thing several months earlier. Check it out:

Then Moses called for Joshua, and as all Israel watched, he said to him, “Be strong and courageous! For you will lead these people into the land that the lord swore to their ancestors he would give them. You are the one who will divide it among them as their grants of land. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.

Who is Endorsing you?

Joshua had the support of his leader.  Joshua had the public endorsement of his leader Moses. I believe this validation comes thru the trust and demonstration of an initiative to get things done. Joshua was a warrior. Joshua was a soldier. Joshua was a leader.

Let’s learn a little more about the dialogue concerning Joshua’s set up for leadership:

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim Range and see the land I have given the Israelites. After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

Moses said to the Lord, “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

So the Lord said to Moses,Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him. Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the Lord. At his command, he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command, they will come in.” -NIV

Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the Lord instructed through Moses.

An endorsement is confirmation to your skill, gifting, and talent.

An endorsement is confirmation to your skill, gifting, and talent. Jay Bryan Sandifer

In our example, the lord used Moses and his existing administration to promote and confirm Joshua’s leadership ability to take over the nation…to take over the vision….to complete the will and desires of God for his people.
AND THEN…..The lord confirms this position and calling into next level leadership by speaking directly to Joshua AFTER Moses had passed.
One quick thought…..who are you shadowing? who are you serving? who are you in a relationship with who will take notice of your hearts efforts to impact this world and generation with your God-given talents, gifts, and skills?
Please take a moment and prayer for this person.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Getting Started. Joshua 1:9

Mind setting is really important when beginning a new journey. The excitement of something new must be prepared to meet the adversity of doubt and unbelieving voices.

When getting ready to embark on a new venture, the mind must be filled with all possible courage and determination.

Could this be why the LORD told Joshua….not once, not twice….but three times to be Strong?

Isn’t once enough? No. It isn’t.

Hearing the right and wise words of success & life one time? It is not enough….it never will be.

Why else would Joshua be instructed to NEVER stop reading the Book of the Law? Why else would the Lord tell Joshua that he MUST think about what it says day AND night?

The reason is simple. Success results from the words of mouth. Life and death are in the power of the tongue.

Quick question….what did God use to create the heavens and the earth? ______________

WORDS…..words are powerful. What we believe and speak over ourselves…even if its only in our thoughts will absolutely produce fruit. As a man or woman thinks in their heart…..they are. We are the all sum total of our thoughts. If we want success we have to think success. It will not happen any other way.

God is ready to be with us in all that we do, but first, we must be with him in all we say. He is ready to place the river in the desert for us. He is able to set the table of feasts in the wilderness. He is the one who challenges us to Self proclaim richness in the midst of poverty, Health in the midst of sickness and strength in the isolation of weakness.

A Simple Formula for Success. Joshua 1:8

There would be no need for positive healthy encouragement if it were not given.

Think about the above statement. Reread it if necessary.

Positive healthy encouragement only comes from a place of confidence, authority, and love those who love, encourage others to move by faith into their Promised Land.

We can read and Joshua 1:8 the Lord is telling Joshua for a second time in the same breath how to secure success and prosperity.

The Lord clearly gives Joshua the formula for success and prosperity. It is a simple formula. According to the biblical Book of Joshua, the formula for True success is as follows:

Keeping the law in your mouth + meditate on the law on the law day and night + doing according to all that is written in the law = a prosperous way, wise dealings, and ultimate true success.

In this formula, there is a lot of mention of the word law. What is this law?

In all practical sense, Jesus Christ sums up the entire law given to Moses with to command. Those two commands are (1) love God and (2) love people.

When you love God, you love people. All is fulfilled because God is love.

True success simply comes from loving God first

Our true success simply comes from loving God first.

Jesus said, seek God’s Kingdom first. If you seek God’s kingdom first in everything you say and do, all needed and necessary things will follow.

Your dreams, your leadership aspirations, and your vision will be yours *after* you seek God’s Kingdom first. In order to seek God’s kingdom first, you must first love God.

God’s kingdom is your secret to success. The kingdom of God is your Providence. Without God’s kingdom, you have no vision, no dream, no plan, no direction, and no true success.

Your true success is located inside of God’s Kingdom. That is why you should seek his kingdom first.

God promises this prosperity and true success when we first look for his kingdom in everything we say and do. Everything. Every day.

I believe, this is what the Lord was telling Joshua, “Joshua, I have success for you but first make sure that you meditate on my words day and night, and do what they say. Put action to the ideas. Bring life to those words through your actions. Make sure these words never leave your mouth, Joshua.

One of the key ingredients to your success is to keep God’s word in your mouth.

Talk to yourself and speak out loud The divinely Inspired words of God continually.

When your mouth opens God’s law and word should be heard and seen and should never be absent.

  • Take in the wisdom of your mentors.
  • Think about the power of their words.
  • Speak out loud and declare them over yourself.
  • There should never be a moment when you are without those words.
  • Think of them constantly.
  • Put them before your eyes.
  • Put them into your ears.
  • Breathe them.
  • Live them.
  • Explore them.
  • Protect them
  • See them happening in your life.
  • Envision them.

How to Have Prosperity. Joshua 1:7

Be strong and very courageous. Make sure to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.

If you want prosperity wherever you go you simply need to keep the focus on the insights, advice, knowledge, wisdom, example, and success of your mentor….wait! You *do* have a mentor, don’t you?

Remember the very first leadership lesson of Joshua. 🙂

Keep the INSIGHT in sight. Jay Bryan Sandifer
Keep the INSIGHT in sight. Jay Bryan Sandifer

Before Joshua began to move forward in his action of leadership, I believe he had to undergo a process of renewal, conditioning and mind setting. Before gaining the necessary confidence to lead a nation of people to victory, I believe Joshua needed to know victory himself. Joshua needed to think about his assignment in the perspective of a specific victorious vision.

Dreaming about the vision actually gave voice to the vision. The vision was able to provide specific directions for Joshua. Your vision will do the same for you too.

In this example, the details of direction were found in the vision. Vision actually became words for Joshua….words in the form of pictures and his mind. Thoughts.

Vision speaks of past, present, and future.

The voice of vision uses the present to light the wood of the *learned and understood* experiences of the past which fuel the fiery passion and desire the future dream.

God used the dream and vision to speak to Joshua.

The Lord used the vision to build Joshua up. The great God of Israel gave Joshua a pep talk that has miraculously continued to encourage lives of the greatest leaders to this day!

According to the text found in the first chapter of the Book of Joshua, this is the second time Joshua is told to be strong.

1. Be strong. Joshua 1:6. This strength was necessary to produce the results of leading others into their Destinies and dreams.

2. Be strong. Joshua 1:7. This strength was necessary to follow the example assess, wisdom m, advice, words of the mentor.

This second strong is what we need if we want to have Prosperity wherever we go.

You may have heard the adage, Success leaves Clues. These Clues are found in the words and examples of those who have gone before us.

The words of your mentor are not new. They are old. They are ancient and timeless. You have heard the wisdom, one-liners, and Proverbs many times.

For you to become prosperous, you need the strength to stay focused on the *law* given to you by your mentor and leader.

Think of 5 things your mentor says that have impacted you. If you can’t think of 5 things, try checking this out.

Support from God. Joshua 1:5

Having support is critical to success.  I can’t think of anything more destructive than feeling unsupported, unloved, unwanted and all alone.

Without support, we are left to our own demise.

Here is some really great news: we are not meant to be left alone. It’s not apart of the plan.

However, as new leaders, its is quite easy to feel alone, especially when things seem overwhelming.

I want to share with you a few thoughts concerning the importance of support and encouragement.

I believe when we begin to the think about the details of our assignment and dream, it’s magnitude, it’s purpose and HUGE potential impact on the world, a dream thief will make aggressive and clever attempts to steal the dream by challenging our ability to make the dream a reality.

*secret: The thief tries to steal the dream by challenging us. He does not challenge the dream, the thief challenges us. The thief can’t touch the dream….because it’s Gods dream.

The only way for the dream to come to pass is for us to give voice and direction to it. We must be able to lead ourselves into the dream first. This only happens thru belief. We must believe our dream is possible. This starts with the initial conception of the dream which is planted into our hearts by the Holy Spirit of God.

By leading ourselves into the dream, we grow with each step in our personal development and leadership confidence. When this happens we attract the right people to join us and follow because it takes other people to help make the dream a reality. The dream is always about people. Always.

When we have an actualization to the boundaries of our dreams, when we begin to clearly see its borders, we may start to think about the process. We begin to think about the details. We think about how this massive dream will actually become reality. We wonder how?

If we are not careful, a thief will come to take the future of the dream by challenge our ability to lead. The thief pulls the hammer of doubt from his belt and begins to tap the nails of excuses into a coffin of unbelief…while we are in it!

If we are not careful, the dream dies before it is ever born.

The dream is aborted between conception and birth.

Our excuses try to put the clothes of explanation on so they [the excuses] are not so naked and shocking. I like what Agatha Christie says about explanations, “To rush into explanations is always a sign of weakness.”

Benjamin Franklin is noted for saying, “He that is good at making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”

Joshua had just as much of an opportunity as any of us to see the vision, get excited about the next season, and then in the next breath talk himself out it when the practicalities of making this awesome dream and national movement a reality seem quite large and impossible.

Thank God. He steps in verbally with clear words of support and encouragement for a reason. Joshua needed God’s support for the vision. So do we.

Joshua, I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you.

I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you. Joshua 1:5 Jay Bryan Sandifer
I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you. Joshua 1:5 Jay Bryan Sandifer

Here are a few thoughts to consider:

  • Has God ever raised up leaders before?
  • If God does not Fail and God will always be with us always, hmmm… where does that leave us?
  • If God reminds us that he will never leave us and a victorious outcome is going to happen as a result of Gods power, grace, ability, comfort, support, why worry?
  • Will God forget about us?

There is Nothing to Fear but Fear itself.

Franklin D Roosevelt, commonly known as FDR, became the United Sates of America’s 32nd President during what he called ‘critical days’.

FDR was the longest serving President of the united states. He served 4,422 days.  He has been considered by many to be one of the top three presidents along side George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Franklin D Roosevelt is known for many quotes. Here is one of them, “There is nothing to fear but fear itself.”

Fear. It is the one thing that seems paralyzes us most. When fear is not properly understood, I believe we are definitely kept away from our fullest potential.

Fear is the opposite of Faith. It is believe the worst will happen instead of the best.

Fear: False Evidence Appearing Real. What a great  acronym for fear by author Neale Donald Walsch.

Fear is powerful. It is used to control. If we are not careful, we will attract the very thing we fear.
